Planning a self-drive adventure through the Sacred Valley or the Andes? At Rent a Car GSM, we make the rental process simple and transparent. Here is everything you need to know about the legal requirements in Peru.
1. Valid ID or Passport
Foreigners must present their original Passport. It is essential that your entry stamp (or TAM - Andean Migration Card) is up to date, as the police may request it at highway checkpoints.
2. Foreign Driver’s License: Is it valid in Peru?
YES. You can drive in Peru using your home country's valid driver's license for up to 6 months after your arrival date. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not mandatory as long as your license is in the Latin alphabet and is valid.
💡 GSM Tip: Always keep your passport and driver's license together while driving toward Ollantaytambo or Pisac. Local authorities often check both.
3. Age Limits & Additional Drivers
The minimum age is 21 years old. If you are traveling with a partner or friends, you can add an "Additional Driver" to the contract so you can take turns during long drives to the Rainbow Mountain or rural areas.
4. Credit Card for Security Deposit
A physical credit card (Visa, Mastercard, or Amex) in the main driver's name is required for a temporary hold. The amount depends on the vehicle category (e.g., a Suzuki Spresso requires a lower deposit than a Toyota Hilux 4x4).
📝 Transparency Note: The hold is released immediately upon returning the vehicle. However, depending on your international bank, it may take 2 to 7 business days to reflect in your statement.
5. Full Insurance Coverage
All our rentals include comprehensive insurance against accidents and theft, giving you peace of mind while exploring the unique geography of Cusco.
