Exploring the Cusco region by car is an unforgettable experience, but the Andean roads require specific precautions. Here are the essential safety keys for your car rental adventure in Cusco.
1. High Altitude Driving & Acclimatization
Cusco sits at 3,400m (11,150ft), and many routes to the Rainbow Mountain or the Sacred Valley go even higher. If you are arriving from sea level, we recommend acclimatizing for at least 24 hours before a long drive. If you feel "soroche" (altitude sickness) while driving, find a safe spot to pull over and rest.
2. Sacred Valley Roads: Curves and Fog
Roads to Pisac and Ollantaytambo are well-paved but feature sharp mountain curves. A vital local tip: use your horn before entering blind curves to alert oncoming drivers. During the rainy season (November to March), fog can be thick; always keep your headlights on.
3. Avoid Night Driving in Rural Areas
Outside Cusco city, highways lack street lighting. It is common for livestock (alpacas or cattle) or pedestrians to cross the road unexpectedly. We strongly advise planning your trips between 6:00 AM and 5:30 PM to ensure you travel with daylight.
4. Speed Limits and Police Checkpoints
Speed limits on highways are generally 80 km/h (50 mph). Always carry your Passport, Driverâs License, and Rental Agreement. Highway Police checkpoints are common on the way to the Sacred Valley; having your documents ready makes the process seamless.
